Summer 2012

Growing the Growers to put
the FARM in urban FARMing

(open to individuals and groups up to 30)

Have your teachers given you assignments about sustainability and the green economy? Have you read articles on the internet or for class about food justice? Have you passed by an urban garden and wondered what they were doing? Have you asked yourself "How can I grow the good food revolution?" If you said yes, then you should join us for Our School at Blair Grocery's 'How Can I Grow the Good Food Revolution' summer program. There is "One thing Missing From the Urban Farming Movement: Farmers." And as the chairman of our Board of Directors, Founder and Director of Growing Power, Will Allen would say, we need less think tanks and more do tanks.

During 12-day program (open to individuals and groups of up to 30), running all summer long, we will provide you and your group the opportunity to participate in hands-on experiential education at our farm in areas such as:
  • Composting and Vermicomposting
  • Aquaponics
  • Poultry Husbandry
  • Beekeping
  • Greenhouse Management
  • Effective and Practical Permaculture
  • Mushroom Production

We will balance the hands-on experience with daily workshops to help you move from thinking through the complexities of the work that needs to be done, to acting in a meaningful and effective way.

To name a few:

  • Given our present reality, where are we moving and where do we want to be?
  • Compare and Contrast diverse Urban Farming initiatives and explore the role that each might play in the Good Food Revolution
  • Where do we go from here?
  • Free Will, Choices, and Choose Your Own Adventure
  • When the political gets personal: when composting pineapple tops turns into war
  • Faith in the Fact creates the fact itself: the Alex Goldman problem.

Our summer runs 16 weeks long, in 12 day trips throughout the summer:

May 31-June 11
June 14-June 25
June 28-July 9
